Summary: This article discusses Windows Communication Foundation (WCF) hosting options and consuming WCF services. The traditional ASMX Web services were hosted only on Microsoft Internet Information Services (IIS). The hosting options for WCF services are significantly enhanced in Microsoft .NET Framework 3.0. We will discuss extending the hosting model to include Windows Services and Self-Hosting options. We will also explore in detail IIS hosting (versions 5.1, 6.0, and 7.0) and Windows Activation Services (WAS) hosting options available for WCF services. The content for this article is based on Chapter 5 of Pro WCF: Practical Microsoft SOA Implementation, published by Apress. This book is authored by a global team of Avanade consultants. It is targeted towards beginner-to-intermediate readers and is part of the Apress series that discusses Windows Presentation Foundation (WPF), Windows Communication Foundation (WCF), and Windows Workflow Foundation (WF).
